Background --  Calvary is a large, catholic cemetery located in the Woodside-Long Island City section of Queens. It is close to both the L.I.E.(Route 495) and the B.Q.E.(Route 278) and readily accessible by car. More than 1.7 million individuals are buried or entombed in the cemetery, which was opened in the mid-1800’s. Burgenlaenders who lived in Queens often ended up being buried at Calvary.

General Observations --  Tombstone markings at this cemetery are relatively good, but because the cemetery is so large it is somewhat time-consuming finding burial sites even after grave locations are known. Staff at the cemetery are helpful and will take the time to provide good directions on how to get to specific gravesites, but it is essential that you have a car to get around.

Burial Record Information --  None of the records for burial locations are maintained on a computerized database. The information is maintained on manual listings that show burials by date. Generally, you will need the specific date of death for the office to provide a burial location.

Office Hours --  The office is open daily from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. However, it closes at 12 noon on Saturdays, and is not open on Sunday.
