Background --  Gate of Heaven Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery located in Hawthorne, New York, which is in Westchester County. It is right off the Taconic Parkway and about 20 miles from New York City. A number of Burgenlaenders who lived in The Bronx or moved to the northern suburbs ended up being buried in Gate of Heaven. It is a beautiful cemetery with a lake near the entrance with the gravesites located on the rolling hills that encompass the cemetery.

General Observations --  Tombstone markings at this cemetery are good, and accordingly it is not that difficult finding burial sites when grave locations are known.  Staff at the cemetery are helpful and will provide visitors with a map and rather detailed directions on how to get to specific gravesites.

Burial Record Information --  All of the records for burial locations are maintained in the office in ledger books by date of burial. There are no computer records. As long as the month and year of death is known, however, a burial location and gravesite can usually be identified.

Office Hours --  The office is open daily from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. However, it closes at 12 noon on Saturdays; and is not open on Sunday.
