Wanda Maria Carroll (née Halwachs)

24/06/1927 - 15/08/2018

Wanda was born in Hamburg, Germany to parents Michael and Kathrine Halwachs. She had three older brothers, Hans, Fritz and Max, who all predeceased her.

Michael Halwachs was born in Grafenschachen and, in 1930, he took his family back to Burgenland to live. As the family was Lutheran and there was no church in Grafenschachen, they settled in Pinkafeld, where the children went to school. The family returned to Hamburg during WW-II, as Michael found work there.

After the war and time in England working, Wanda decided, on a whim, to travel to Australia, just to see what was there. In 1958, she set sail for the other side of the world, and found the man of her dreams. She married an Australian, Alan Carroll, in 1960 and had two children, John in 1961 and Pamela in 1962. They were happily married for almost 50 years.

Wanda was a fabulous homemaker and her cooking was wonderful. She also loved to sew and craft. She was also active in her beloved Australian German Lutheran Church.

She died peacefully in her sleep, aged 91, and leaves her son John, daughter Pam, son in law Gregory, granddaughters Amanda and Tamsin and great grandchildren Cooper and Lola. Wanda was laid to rest Aug. 22, 2018, at Hawkesbury/Richmond Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, Australia.

Franz Simitz

Franz "Frank" Simitz, February 5 1925 - June 1, 2018

Peacefully with family at his side at Southlake Regional Health Centre, at the age of 93.

Born in Burgenland, Austria, immigrated to Canada in 1954, he lived in Richmond Hill for over 50 years and recently, Aurora.

Frank was a man who loved the simple pleasures. Tending his beautiful flowers and organic vegetable gardens in Richmond Hill, backyard picnic table gatherings with good friends, and always-his wife's home cooking. He often had a schnapps or wine-making project on the go; notably blueberry wine from hand-picked berries, at some peril, with his family in the Soo. He had a great reverence for nature, and enjoyed the seasons of planting and harvesting reflective of his farming roots in Burgenland, Austria.

Upon immigrating to Canada in 1954 Frank took on a trade and was a proud Carpenter's Union Local 27 member for over 50 years; known for his work ethic and perfectionism.

He was a very logical and knowledgeable man, who enjoyed numbers, often with a Sudoku in hand, always to be done in ink only; no mistakes allowed!

He leaves behind Bibiana, his dedicated wife of 64 years, his children Ernest, Edith Burch (the late Randy), Gertrude Paraskevin (Ken) and Edward. His grandchildren who simply made him beam; Madeline, Emily, Julia and Michael. And his favorite dog, Betty White.

Decidedly old-school stern, he mellowed with age and in the end he leaves us these gifts: the love he had for his family, a legacy of honest and determined work, the value of simplicity vs materialism, thinking for oneself, staying aware of global events yet acting locally, and putting away for the future. Thanks Dad!

A small, happy ("crying doesn't help") private celebration of life will be held on Saturday July 7 at Thompson Funeral Home in Aurora 12:00-3:00; with planned spoken words about 12:30. In lieu of flowers, Frank would have said "save your money". So if you wish, tend to a plant in his honour, or enjoy a simple pleasure with those you love. Please bring your fond memories to share and be prepared to raise a glass. Prosit!

John Mulzet

John Edward Mulzet, 95 years, of Fogelsville, Pennsylvania, passed away at home on Easter morning, April 1, 2018.

Johnny was the loving husband of Kathryn "Kitty" Mulzet for 62 years until her passing on January 29, 2011. Together, they raised five children.

Born in Tschanigraben, Burgenland, Austria, he was the son of the late Josef and Rosina (Hutter) Mulzet, and late stepmother, Hedwig (Hammerl) Mulzet.

Josef emigrated to the US through Ellis Island, NY on March 3, 1923, later bringing Rosina with young Johnny and his older sister Rose. Johnny grew up in Coplay and Allentown and then served in the Army during WWII while stationed in Hawaii after the Pearl Harbor attack. Later, as a carpenter, Johnny worked in furniture manufacturing and then at Bethlehem Steel from which he gratefully retired in 1981. After retirement, Johnny had already become an expert clammer and fisherman. With his friends, and wife and family in tow, Johnny spent many summer days on his boat, mostly in Little Egg Harbor Bay near Long Beach Island. Nearby and for over 40 years, he often joined family and friends around campfires at "the camp," his base for fishing where he and Kitty kept a summer camper at Sea Pirate Light in West Creek NJ. Over the years, and with intimate knowledge of the bay's waterways, Johnny harvested thousands of clams and hundreds of fluke -- always sharing his bounty of seafood, tomatoes, and vegetables from his large garden.

During winters, Johnny and Kitty became talented folk artists -- he providing the wood designs and cuts, and Kitty providing the whimsical decorations. They exhibited their winters' work at area craft shows in the spring seasons, mostly in Roncocas Woods, NJ. In his final years, Johnny continued to live actively and independently at his home of over 60 years. Locally, he was well-known as "the Captain," the oldest regular member at the Fitness Plaza in Allentown where he exercised early mornings for 17 years until two weeks before his passing.

Survivors: sons, John J. of Whitehall, Robert E. of Melbourne FL, Barry J. and wife Kami of Phoenixville; daughters, Linda S., wife of Matthew Pramik of Emmaus, and Janice A., wife of Stuart Smith of Cape Canaveral, FL; sisters, Helen of Breinigsville, Mary Ann of Allentown, Pat of Allentown, Linda of Breinigsville, and all late Rose, Frida, Ruth, and Rosemarie; grandchildren, Cali, Connor, and Jordan; great-grandchildren, Mia and Brooke. Theresia Vanderpoel

Theresia Vanderpoel, age 94, of De Pere, Wisconsin, entered her heavenly home on March 27, 2018.

Born October 1, 1923 in Hannersdorf, Austria, she was a daughter of the late Adolph and Maria (Schöck) Joseph.

In 1936, Theresia and her family left Austria and made Chicago their new home. While Theresia's heart was always in "the old country," she grew to love city life in Chicago and lived there for the next 50 years. Theresia married Allen "Jack" Vanderpoel and they had two sons, John and Allen.

Theresia worked at AT&T and State Farm Insurance before retiring and moving to De Pere at the age of 62. She was a Sunday School teacher and librarian at St. John's Lutheran School in Chicago, and volunteered in her grandchildren's classrooms at Dickinson Elementary in De Pere. Theresia was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. Above all else, Theresia was a woman of faith and family. She loved to bake, paint, draw, sing, play her guitar, sew, and crochet. She was the picture of good health nearly all her life, never drove anywhere she could walk to, and spent hours in her vegetable and flower gardens. Theresia was a strong, loving, and honorable woman, who loved the Lord and had a fantastic sense of humor, as well as a bit of an Austrian stubborn streak. We loved her beyond words and will miss her dearly.

Survivors include Theresia's two sons, John and Allen, and Allen's wife, Juanita (Deterding); six grandchildren and their spouses: Joe and Kim Vanderpoel, Julie and Justin Hoerth, Jamie and Todd Olsen, and Caleb, Jacob, and Ethan Vanderpoel; and five great granddaughters: Annaleise, Elin, and Tess Hoerth, and Penelope and Frankie Olsen.

Theresia was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Adolph and Maria, and her husband, Jack. She is also believed to be preceded in death by her brother, Adolph Joseph, who was POW/MIA in the Korean War. RYAN FUNERAL HOME, De Pere is assisting the family.

The family will honor Theresia's life with a private memorial service.

To our sweet mom and grandma, we love you. "Always have, always will." Now rest, you've lived a life to be proud of.
