Steingraben: Catholic and Civil Records
This database is courtesy of BB member Charles von Breitenbach, who has ancestors with a long history in
Steingraben. This began as a personal project to transcribe Catholic birth records for family members in Steingraben but
expanded to include all birth records for Steingraben found in the records of its Catholic parish,
Gerersdorf bei Güssing (Hungarian: Németszentgrót). Later, I pushed
Charles into helping transcribe all death records for Steingraben and I chose to transcribe the corresponding
marriages.
The transcription of Steingraben records from the Gerersdorf Catholic parish books is for the years 1828 to 1895
and currently consists of the complete transcription of the 747 birth records, 204 marriage records, and 559
death records. Copyright remains with Charles von Breitenbach and Thomas Steichen.
Further, included is a complete transcription of the 304 Steingraben birth records, 69 Steingraben marriage records, and the 200
Steingraben death records found in the Gerersdorf civil recording district records for the years 1895 through 1920. Name
spellings (both surname and given names) have been standardized in these datasets to allow easier searches; you should check the
original image for the exact form that appears in the records. [Standardized means only that a single form
of a given name, or of what is believed to be the same surname, is used in the records, regardless
of what was recorded.]
Steingraben was also known by the Hungarian names Bányácska and Bánya and the Croatian
name Bojane. The name Bányácska is used for all entries in this collection (regardless of the
variation entered in the original record).
The Gerersdorf parish and its subsequent civil recording district also included itself
and the villages of Rehgraben (Hungarian: Özgödör, Croatian: Pracevo) and Sulz
(Hungarian: Sóskut; Croatian: ekut). The civil recording district also included Heugraben,
Kroatisch Tschantschendorf, Krottendorf, Neustift bei Güssing and
Tudersdorf for years 1907-1908. Records for these villages are not included (except when a
Steingraben-related birth also involved a parent from one of these villages).
The column "FS Page" identifies the image page on which each record appears in the Gerersdorf FamilySearch
collection, where
Catholic births =
familysearch.org/search/film/004674857,
Catholic marriages =
familysearch.org/search/film/004674857 and
Catholic deaths =
familysearch.org/search/film/004674857.
Civil birth and death records were both split between two films, thus a film identifier column identifies the films in those
transcriptions, Thus:
Civil birth 1 =
familysearch.org/search/film/005036236 (1895-1903), and
Civil birth 2 =
familysearch.org/search/film/005036237 (1904-1920).
Civil marriage =
familysearch.org/search/film/005036238 (1895-1920).
Civil death 1 = familysearch.org/search/film/007161308
(1895-1906), and
Civil death 2 = familysearch.org/search/film/007161310
(1907-1020).
