"The Fruth family came from the region of Amberg, Bavaria about 100 years ago to escape
the wars and social unrest of Europe. They saw in the U.S.A. an opportunity to enjoy personal and
religious freedom. Qualities they had in common were: uprightness of character, respect for
the rights of others, sense of duty, and firm adherence to the age-old Catholic religion. Today the
family numbers 671 known members in this country and Germany. In the family are 2 Priests, 1
Brother, and 16 Sisters called by God to dedicate their lives to His service and that of the
neighbor."

Although Father Fruth listed the village name as Kemnathöd, the correct spelling
appears to be Kemnatheröd. Reference books indicate that the "Weiler" (small hamlet) called
Kemnatheröd, Bavaria, Germany is about 1 mile south of the "Dorf" (village) called Hohenkemnath, and
both are about 5 miles southwest of Amberg, Germany. Thus Kemnatheröd is in southeastern Germany
about 35 miles east of Nürmberg, 30 miles north-northwest of Regensburg and about 45 miles from the
Czech Republic border. Tiny Kemnatheröd currently has but 5 houses and 17 residents. The population
of the larger Hohenkemnath was 188 in 1912 and is currently 287. The local Catholic church, Mariä
Himelfahrt (Assumption of the Virgin Mary), is in Hohenkemnath. Hohenkemnath is governmentally part
of town Ursensollen in the Kreis (county) of Amberg-Sulzbach in the Regierungsbezirk (administrative
district) of Oberpfalz in the Land (state) of Bavaria in Germany.

Collegeville. -- Letzte Woche Dienstag ist nach langem und schwerem Leiden, das durch
Magenkrebs verursacht wurde, Frau Johanna Fruth im hause ihres Sohnes Michael Fruth, bei dem sie ein
angenehmes Unterkommen hatte, bestens auf den schweren Gang in die Ewigkeit vorbereitet, im Alter
von 69 Jahren aus dem Leben geschieden. Die Verstorebene wurde in Deutsch-Polen geboren, von wo sie
im Alter von 28 Jahren nach Amerika kam. Ein Jahr später verheirathete sie sich mit Georg Fruth und
hatte alle die Jahre ihre Heimath hier. Ihr Gatte ging ihr vor sechs Jahren in die Ewigkeit voran.
Sie war wie ihren Kindern eine stets fürsorgliche Mutter, so ihrer kath. Kirche eine treue
Anhängerin. Jeden Tag sah man sie in der Kirche sich dem Tische des Herrn nähern, und von diesem
löblichen Gebrauche ließ sie sich durch kein Unwetter abhalten. Sechs Kinder betrauern den Tod der
guten Mutter. Es sind dies: die ehrw. Benediktinerschwestern Karmel von Bismark, N.D., und Genovefa
von Perham, Mich. Fruth von hier, Alois von Luxemburg und die Frauen Nik. Zwilling und Math. Pflüger
von hier. Am Freitagmorgen fand nach einem in der Pfarrkirche gehaltenen Seelenamte im Beisein des
Frauenvereins, dessen langjähriges, ehrenwertes Mitglied sie gewesen, und unter sonst großer
Teilnahme die Beerdigung statt. Möge die Dahingeschiedene ruhen in Frieden! Die hinterbliebenen
Kindern nehmen diese Gelegenheit wahr, allen, die ihnen während der langen Leidenszeit der guten

Translation:
Collegeville. -- Last week Tuesday, after long and heavy suffering that was caused by
stomach cancer, Mrs. Johanna Fruth, in the house of her son Michael Fruth, with whom she had a
comfortable accommodation, prepared in the best way for the difficult passage into the eternity, is
separated at the age of 69 years out of the life. The deceased in German-Poland was born, from where
she came at the age of 28 years to America. One year later she married herself with George Fruth and
had all the years her home here. Her husband preceded her for six years into the eternity. She was,
as for her children an always considerate mother, so her Catholic Church a faithful follower. Each
day one saw her in the church to the Table of the Lord approaching, and of this laudable use she let
herself be held off by no thunderstorm. Six children mourned the death of the good mother. These
are: the honorable Benedictine Sisters Carmel from Bismark, N.D., and Genevieve from Perham, Michael
Fruth from here, Alois from Luxemburg, and Mrs. Nikolaus Zwilling and Mrs. Mathias Pflüger from
here. On Friday morning occurred, after a Requiem mass held in the parish church in the presence of
the Women's Society, whose long-time honorable member she was, and under otherwise large
participation, the funeral. May the deceased rest in peace! The surviving children take this
opportunity all, to you which were helpful to them during the long suffering time of the good mother
and gave her words of comfort, all that gave the last honor escort to the deceased, and gave her

Mr. (John) Wertin was born at Lubach, Austria, April 12, 1860. He emigrated to this
country in 1874, coming to Richmond, where he found employment on a farm. In 1877 he was engaged
with Maurin Bros. at Cold Spring. In 1880 he went to St. Joe, where he remained until coming to
Albany in 1885. In 1885 Jos. Kraker sold (his store in Albany, MN) to Peter Kraker and John Wertin,
school companion(s). When the two young men bought the business the stock was about $4,700. As the
country developed and the settlers learned of the hidden wealth of the surrounding country, the
business expanded with bounds and strides. An elevator was erected and the buying of grain as well
as wood proved quite profitable. In 1911 the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Kraker keeping the
general store and grain business and Mr. Wertin taking the hardware and furniture business, the
stock of which was valued at about $10,000. Both Peter Kraker and John Wertin are interested in two
banks, the Albany State bank and the Bynum State bank at Bynum, Montana. Beside this, John Wertin
has several tracts of land in Marshall and Stearns counties.

I am researching the Wertin and Vertin surnames from Slovenia (formerly Austria). Most
if not all WERTINs in the U.S. are descended from families which lived in Doblice. I noticed Mat
Kraker is from Jernejava in Crnomelj Parish; this is in the same parish my Wertin's are from. I am
not sure that both Krakar and Wertin were born in Lubach which is I believe Laibach, today's
Ljubljana, the capitol of Slovenia. I know that people gave the name that people knew of rather than
the exact name of the village, and that most people did not remember exactly when they were born.

Christian Speiser, a genial farmer of St. Joseph township was born in Philadelphia,
Penn., September 30, 1855, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Rummer) Speiser. Henry Speiser was born in
Germany, located in Philadelphia in 1848 and came to St. Joseph township in 1859. He died here in
1860. The widow later married Frank Speiser, a brother of her first husband, who died in 1883. She
died in 1903. By the first marriage there were four children: Christian, of St. Joseph; Charles, of
Wahpeton, North Dakota; Kate, of Douglas county, Minn., and Elizabeth, who is deceased. She was
married to Charles Bollman. Christian was reared in St. Joseph township, and has always remained on
the home farm. He owns 207 acres, where he conducts general farming on a successful scale. He is a
genial man, pleasant to meet, and popular with his neighbors and friends. Especially is he well
informed on the events of the early days, and his stories of those far distant times are most
interesting. He has served on the town board of supervisors. The family are members of the Catholic
Church.

From Terry Fruth (Feb 2005): Our family went to Brainerd in the late 19th Century---probably to
get cheap land. The George Fruth farm was in St. Mathias Twp. outside of Brainerd. When my
grandfather George died in l951, his oldest son, Joe, took over the farm and the rest of the
siblings went into other occupations. After the War, my father, Frank, started the Fruth Beverage
Company, a wholsale beer distributorship, which is now run by our oldest brother Gary. My mother,
Ethel, was one of six Darling kids who grew up dirt poor during the depression in Barrows, outside
of Brainerd. Those Darling children scattered to the winds. Only my mother stayed--she is well and
living in a senior's residence in Brainerd. My father died in l985.

Mrs. Clara (Fruth) Zwilling, 82, died Sunday at the Adelman nursing home after a lingering illness.
She was born June 8, 1877.
Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Alphonse Hoeschen (Margaret),
Watkins; Sister Berchmans OSB, (Elizabeth) and Sister Cuthbert OSB, (Marie), St. Joseph; Mrs. Herman

Nick Zwilling, 85, died Friday, after an illness of four weeks, at the home of Alphonse

Seminary, Collegeville. She was in motherhouse services at St. Benedict's Convent, St. Joseph. She
taught theology at the College of St. Benedict for 22 years.
Survivors include her brothers, Joseph, Avon; Celestine, Waite Park; sisters, Margaret Hoeschen,
Watkins; Theresa Lambert, Edina; Helen Middendorf, Freeport; and Sister Marie Zwilling, St.
Benedict's Convent, St. Joseph. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and one
sister.

Obituary: MAY THE ANGELS LEAD HER INTO PARADISE
Sister Berchmans (Elizabeth) Zwilling, 91, died peacefully at St. Scholastica Convent at 6:20
a.m. on Thursday, August 17, 1995. Sister was born in Morris, MN, on January 7, 1904, the fourth
child of Nick and Clara (Fruth) Zwilling. The family moved to Collegeville where Sister attended the
district school. Her decision at age 18 to enter St. Benedict's Convent was the result of
contrasting the wealth of liturgical prayer that she observed at St. John's Abbey with the scarcity
of such prayer in rural parishes. Sister attended St. Benedict's Academy, entered the novitiate in
1925, and professed vows on July 11, 1929. Sister Marie, her younger sister, professed vows the same
day.
Sister Berchmans regarded her life as one of exceptional receiving that enabled wholehearted
giving. From the novitiate she was assigned to Wadena where she spent 17 happy years teaching fifth
and sixth grades and directed altar boys. During summers she attended the College of St. Benedict
and teacher's colleges in Moorhead and St. Cloud. In 1943 she returned to St. Benedict's to attend
college and assist the director of postulants. On receiving the B.A. degree in English in 1944, she
was delighted to enroll in the first graduate school of theology for women, St. Mary's, Notre Dame.
She received her Ph.D. degree in theology in 1946. Then for six years she faced the challenge of
teaching religion to release time classes from Tech H.S., St. Cloud, and Cathedral H.S. religion
classes for seven years. At Cathedral Convent she served as Superior. Then, from 1959 to 1993, with
the exception of a year at St. Augustine's, St. Cloud, Sister Berchmans lived at St. Benedict's. She
taught theology at the College of St. Benedict and at St Cloud Hospital School of Nursing.
Participating in a five-year program of summer sessions at Loyola U. on theology increased her
eagerness to teach Christianity as a unified whole. Sister Berchmans also helped to train lay
religion teachers in parishes and taught courses at St. John's Seminary. In retirement she assisted
with convent administration and served as a tour guide.
Sister is survived by her Benedictine community; two brothers, Celestine, Waite Park; and Joseph,
Avon; four sisters, Margaret Hoeschen, Watkins; Sister Marie; O.S.B., St. Joseph; Theresa Lambert,
Edina; and Helen Middendorf, Freeport. Three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Both Sister Berchmans' life and her teachings were grounded in her openness to the presence of
Christ in herself, in others and everywhere. We rejoice that she has been received into the fullness
of Christ's presence.

S. Marie was born May 6, 1906, to Nick and Clara (Fruth) Zwilling in Collegeville,
Minn. She attended grade school in rural Collegeville and Saint Benedict's High School in St.
Joseph. She entered Saint Benedict's Monastery on August 24, 1923. On June 18, 1925, she was
received into the novitiate as Sister Cuthbert. Her first monastic profession was on July 11, 1926,
and perpetual profession on July 11, 1929. In 1968 she resumed the use of her baptismal name Marie.
At the College of Saint Benedict, S. Marie earned a degree in elementary education. She
went on to further studies at Moorhead State College, St. Cloud State University, Diocesan Teachers'
College and the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. For many years she ministered as
principal and/or teacher in Wadena; Waite Park; Holy Angels and St. Peter's in St. Cloud; Albany;
and at St. Joseph's and St. Mary's Basilica in Minneapolis. She also served as librarian at the
College of Saint Benedict and at Saint Benedict's Monastery. She moved to Saint Scholastica Convent
on November 5, 2002.
S. Marie is survived by her Benedictine community and two sisters (Therese Lambert and Helen
Middendorf). She was preceded in death by five brothers (Math, John, Aloys, Joseph and Celestine)
and three sisters: (Frances Steichen, Elizabeth [S. Berchmans, OSB] and Margaret Hoeschen).

Mathias Pflueger, born July 18, 1876 petitioned for a release from citizenship. Here is a report
of the District Magistrate, dated 24 July, 1893: "In the matter of the petition of Mathias Pflueger
of Wallenborn for the granting of a release certificate, I would point out that his half-brother,
Mathias Zwilling, who was given a free pass by Pflueger, was convicted of desertion by a
court-martial on March 1, 1893. Likewise, another half-brother, Nicholaus Zwilling, who was
conscripted last fall by the Infantry, has deserted. Therefore it is to be suspected that Mathias
Pflueger wishes the release solely to dodge his Military Service obligations."
The government of the Trier Administrative District has imparted the following communication to
Johann Pflueger in Wallenborn: "Your alleged minor son Mathias Pflueger, who was born on July 18,
1876, and has therefore already reached his 17th year, can thus be issued a release from Prussian
citizenship only if he furnishes a certificate from the Military Recruiting Commission to the effect
that he is not seeking the release solely to evade service in either the standing Army or in the
fleet. Since the Commission has refused to issue such a certificate, therefore I am not in a
position to make out the release papers."

Father Alban Bernard Fruth, OSB, 1913 - 1996
Coming from a family of eight brothers and four sisters and with one Benedictine uncle (Father
Bonaventure Hansen) and five Benedictine aunts, Bernard Fruth had an early inkling of what life
might be like in a large monastic community. The sixth child of Aloys and Anna (Hansen) Fruth, he
grew up on a 240-acre farm near the small town of Luxemburg, Minnesota, not far from St. John's
Abbey. In his novitiate autobiography entitled "The Journey to the Monastery" he wrote, "Life at
home was characterized chiefly by frugality and simplicity. We were all great lovers of music. Very
often music afforded the only source of amusement."
Desiring to become a priest, young Bernard was given a full scholarship to attend St. John's
Preparatory School in 1927. In his senior year of high school he won first prize in the Chesterson
Club oratory contest and second place in the annual elocution contest, feats that his confreres will
surely find amazing. He continued his college education at St. John's University and entered the
abbey's novitiate in 1933, receiving the name of Alban. Mixing his subsequent study of theology with
that of architecture - an area that would serve him well during his missionary years - he was
ordained to the priesthood in 1940.
During the next twelve years, Father Alban did pastoral and missionary work in the Bahamas where
confreres had been laboring since 1891. There he served as associate pastor and pastor of several
churches in Nassau, as chaplain of a leper colony and several hospitals, and as the director of the
Bahamas Catholic Band and the Boy Scouts Drum and Bugle corps. He also designed and helped build
several churches, rectories and schools at various parishes in Nassau and on the Family Islands of
Grand Bahamas, Bimini and Andros. At the suggestion of his abbot, he took flying lessons with the
hope of offering sea-plane travel between the islands. Although this plan did not materialize at the
time, Father Alban did use his experience as a pilot to reconnoiter New Providence Island and
recover the stolen car of a confrere.
Upon his return to the States in 1952, Father Alban began a series of pastoral assignments to
Minnesota parishes in Ogema, Red Lake, Nebish, St. Joseph, Mahnomen, Bejou, Island Lake, White
Earth, St. Martin, Cloquet, Sawyer and Brookson plus a short term at St. Benedict's Church in the
Bronx. He again planned and helped build several churches. For the centenary of the founding of the
mission for Native Americans at Red Lake in 1958 he wrote a 125-page history of that settlement.
Father Alban's pastoral work was characterized by his firmness in matters of doctrine and
practice. He once stated, "I don't want people to come to church because they like the priest but
because they want to thank God and do what's right. We have all eternity in front of us. There is
still lots of room in heaven for creative things, for joy."
In his autobiography Father Alban admitted, "I felt best when I had just a trifle more work to do
than that which I was conveniently able to do." He put that principle into practice by building a
small portable organ as well as a full-sized electronic organ that took him three hours a day for
three weeks to wire the circuitry. He also built an eight-inch telescope to study the stars in the
clear, quiet skies of his lonely missions in northern Minnesota. He was an avid reader in nine
languages.
Retiring to the abbey in 1991, Father Alban continued his policy of "a trifle more work." No
sooner had he settled into his monastery room than he began to offer barbering service to his
confreres. The more heads he trimmed the better he got. Despite - or maybe because of - the dry
monotone of his voice, he volunteered for evening table reading. Several times a week he would pack
up his portable organ and go off to visit area retirement centers where he entertained the elderly
residents with a repertoire he had composed himself.
The closing line of Father Alban's autobiography reads, "May the future be prolific of 'good
days' so that all will be in readiness when the night comes." The evening of that night came several
months ago when he was diagnosed as having inoperable cancer of the liver. In his customary calm and
unruffled manner he awaited the night of his death that marks the advent of a newer, brighter day
that will know no night. Like the good tree that is known by its good fruit, Father Alban can now
keep busy learning the new hymns and canticles of the heavenly choirs in praise and thanksgiving of
the God of life eternal.

The St. Cloud Photo News (morning edition) of December 7, 1964 did a story about
Anna. Originally from New York City, Anna's mother died and her father remarried. His new wife did
not want any girls. Anna was sent to the New York Foundling Home. Her sister was older and was sent
out to work and had quit school while in 5th grade. When Anna was 5 years old, between 300 and 400
"orphan" children were put on a train to find new homes. Some children were as young as two months
old. Each had a little bag with a tin cup, plate, fork and spoon. The train traveled into Canada and
then into Minnesota. The train stopped at larger cities and people would come and pick out children
to adopt. The Kunkel family had only one daughter and chose to adopt Anna. When they adopted Anna,
the family spoke only German and Anna spoke only English. The family welcomed Anna with a new doll.
They had quite a time of it. When she was 26 years old, Anna found her natural sister. The story in
the St. Cloud Photo News resulted from a reunion of the train children that was held in St. Cloud.
As many as 35,000 children were placed in new homes via the "Orphan Trains". The trains
were the idea of Methodist Minister Charles Loring Brace, founder of the Children's Aide Society of
New York. Some children found themselves riding the train more than once. Janet Liebl wrote a book
entitled "Ties That Bind, the Orphan Train Story in Minnesota".
Anna's birth parents were Andrew and Mary (Handera) Gaydos.

Herman Middendorf was born in Melrose Township, Stearns County to Henry and Mary
(Westendorf) Middendorf. He married Helen Zwilling on October 13, 1936 at St. John the Baptist
Church in Collegeville. The couple farmed near the Freeport area until 1974 when they moved to town.
Herman remained active with farming by helping his sons on their family farms until 91 years of age.
He enjoyed farming, reading and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Herman was a
member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, St. Joseph's Men's Society and the Freeport
Lions Club.

1979. He also was employed as a mechanic at Eich Motor Co. from 1950 to 1965, then worked for the
Royal-Melrose Granite Co., St. Cloud, from 1965 to 1979. From 1979 to 1992, he worked in maintenance
at St. Benedict's Center until retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II stationed in
India, a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, North Prairie, and a current member of St.
Anthony's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his children, Irene Kucala of Waite Park, Richard of Sauk Rapids,

Cecilia "Ceil" C. Fruth was born November 22, 1916 in Luxemburg, MN, to Joseph and Anna
(Krier) Harren. She married Leo M. Fruth on June 14, 1938 at St. Wendelin's Catholic Church,
Luxemburg. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Eagles Aerie #622 Auxiliary.

Hentges, 79, of Darwin. She died May 2 at Emmanuel Home in Litchfield. The Rev. Fr. Pat Casey

Agnes Mary Hentges was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Kimball, the daughter of John and Frances
(Zwilling) Steichen. She was baptized as an infant and later was confirmed in her faith as a youth
in Kimball. She grew up in the Kimball area. Hentges lived in the Darwin area all of her life. She
was blessed with 11 children. She held employment at the Litchfield Garment Co. in Litchfield for
many years. Hentges was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Darwin. In her spare time, she
enjoyed reading.

Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Steichen, the son of John and Francis (Zwilling) Steichen, was
born on April 3, 1924 in Pearl Lake, MN. He attended the Pearl Lake school district. Bernard was
united in marriage to Clara Schaefer at the Holy Angels Catholic Chuch in St. Cloud on July 2, 1949.
He lived in St. Augusta and later moved to the Ed. Marklowitz Sr. farm where he helped as a farm
hand for two years. In 1951 he moved into Litchfield. Bernard worked for Litchfield Shipping
Association for 26 years where he was the manager for many years. He later was a Cenux bulk fuel
driver before retiring at age 62. Bernard was a member of St. Philip's Catholic Church and a
lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed small engine maintenamce and repair, fishing,
playing cards and going out for coffee with the guys.
Bernard is survived by his wife Clara of Litchfield; children Linda (Dennis) Witucki of

MARY LISA STEICHEN
Mary Lisa Steichen, four-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Steichen of
Litchfield, died Sunday at University Hospital, where she had been a patient for a day. Funeral
services were held Tuesday at 8 a.m., at St. Philip's Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Myles McGowan
officiating. Internment was in Calvary Cemetery.
Surviving are her parents; four brothers, Thomas, Franklin, Neal and Michael; five
sisters, Linda, Jane, Judy, Ruth, and Berna Kay; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Steichen of St.

Joseph Ignatius Steichen was born on April 9, 1928 in Maine Prairie Township to
John and Frances (Zwilling) Steichen. He lived most of his life in the Kimball area and attended
school in Kimball through the 8th grade; at that time he left school to work on the family farm. Joe
married his neighbor, Donna Jean Weisman, on October 24, 1951 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in
Kimball. This union was blessed with three daughters: Joyce, Gloria and JoAnne.
Joe was drafted into the Army on March 27, 1952 and he served in active duty
until December 26, 1953. He served on the front line during the Korean War from October 16, 1952
until July 20, 1953 and he continued his service in the Army Reserves until April 20, 1960. He
received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army as Sergeant with three Bronze Stars.
Joe worked at the Paynesville, Kimball and Annandale creameries before accepting
the job that brought the most joy to his life at the Kimball Public Schools; he worked as a
custodian for Kimball from August 3, 1970 until November 1, 1991. During his spare time he spent
countless hours making and repairing bikes for the children of Kimball. In his retirement, Joe spent
his time at the Kimball United Methodist Church, doing lawn care for many people, driving bus for
Hendricks Bus Service and in his garage tinkering and making beautiful wooden treasures. Joe’s zest
for life and genuine compassion is a rare and true gift that will be greatly missed by everyone
whose life he touched.

Gloria & Charlie Olson of South Haven and JoAnne & Chuck Weiland of Mayer; “special sons” & their

Donna J. Steichen, age 79, of Kimball died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Heritage

Donna Jean Steichen was born on October 20, 1931 in Rockville to Martin Weisman
and Eileen (Coulter) Weisman. She lived most of her life in the Kimball area and graduated from
Kimball High School in 1949. Donna married her childhood sweetheart Joseph Steichen on October 24,
1951 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Kimball. She worked at the State Bank of Kimball, Robinson Red
Owl, Knaus Sausage House, and then for 31 years as a secretary to the Principal at Kimball Area
Schools until retiring in 1997. During her employment at Kimball Schools, Donna was very active in
the sports programs and received numerous awards for her support of these programs. In retirement
Donna volunteered with the Foster Grandparent Program at Watkins Elementary School, Camp Friendship,
Talahi Summer Program, and Annandale Elementary School.
She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Joe of Kimball, daughters Joyce
(Doug) Quast of Kimball, Gloria (Charlie) Olson of South Haven, JoAnne (Chuck) Weiland of Mayer,
'special sons' Trent (Shelly) Greeley of Crosby & Ted (Annette) Greeley of St. Michael, sister in
law Maxine Weisman, grandchildren Robin (Brandon) Bollingmo, Aaron Olson, Joey Hendrickson, Trent
Olson, Kara Weiland, & Cody Weiland, and a great granddaughter Madeline Bollingmo. The pallbearers

BRUCE MANUEL, 42, NEW ORLEANS
MAPLE LAKE -- Bruce A. Manuel, 42, formerly of Maple Lake, died Saturday at his home in
New Orleans from complications from the effects of AIDS. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday
at St. Timothy's Catholic Church. The Rev. Mark R. Juettner will officiate. Burial will be in the

Bruce Manuel was born Oct. 9, 1951, in Monticello to Andrew and Zita (Steichen) Manuel
and was a 1969 graduate of Maple Lake High School. He lived in Moorhead from 1970 to 1978, was a
graduate of Moorhead State University and was employed as a technical director of the theatrical
department at the university. He lived in Minneapolis from 1978 to 1980, earned his Masters degree
from the University of Minnesota and worked in the university's theatrical department. He lived in
Fredricksburg, Va., from 1980 to 1982. He has been a resident of New Orleans for the past seven
years and was coordinator of special arts and education for Jefferson Parish Schools and technical
director of the 1984 World's Fair.
Survivors include his mother, Maple Lake; brothers and sisters, Roger, Lawrence, Alice
and Paul, Maple Lake; and Carol Chandler, Otsego. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorials

Helen Holt was born March 19, 1932 in Pearl Lake, MN to John and Frances (Zwilling)
Steichen. Helen married Eugene Anderson on August 16, 1951, where the two farmed in Meeker County.
They divorced in 1981. Helen then married Joyce Holt on September 8, 1990 at the First Baptist
Church in St. Cloud, MN. She worked for Fingerhut, then worked for A-1 Personal Tax office for 11
years. Helen was a member of the American Legion Post #428 Auxiliary, Waite Park, MN. She was a
volunteer for the National Federation for the Blind.

Joyce "J.R." Holt, age 69 of St. Joseph, formerly of St. Cloud died at the St. Cloud
Hospital with complications from cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 19,
at First Baptist Church in St. Cloud. Burial will follow at North Star Cemetery in St. Cloud with
full military rites provided by St. Cloud VFW Post 428. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday
at the Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud, and one hour prior to the service at the church on
Thursday. VFW Post 428 prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Joyce (J.R.) was born on July 27, 1931 in Clotho, MN to Oren and Margaret (Sanders)
Holt. He married Helen E. O'Brien on July 2, 1955 at First Baptist Church in St. Cloud. She died
October 13, 1989. He then married Helen M. Anderson on September 8, 1990 at First Baptist Church in
St. Cloud. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of VFW Post 428, a member and usher of
the First Baptist Church, a volunteer of the National Federation for the Blind and was employed at
DCI in St. Cloud for 25 years. Joyce enjoyed camping, dancing, gardening and helping others.

Jeffery W. Anderson, age 34, of Willmar, formerly of the Litchfield area, died Tuesday,

Why would a talented man with a good job take a substantial paycut to go and work
for the nuns, and stay for 30 years? It wasn't out of love for "the cloth" but Don Pflueger now
thinks it was a good choice: "Thirty years is a long time, but it went by quickly."
Don had worked in building construction in this area for 10 years. The pay was
good for 1971 ($7.55 per hour), but there were no benefits. Actually, he admits, he had been laid
off and was looking around the Saint Ben's campus when a sister referred him to Jim Stagner, who
said, "Yes, we need a painter."
Although the pay was much lower, "They told me of the benefits, including college tuition. But we
were just married and had no kids, so that went in one ear and out the other. For a while I thought
about going back to construction." But now he's glad he stayed. Don could not foresee that he and
his wife Rose Ann would have three daughters (Laura, Jennifer, and Joyce), all of whom would
graduate from the College of Saint Benedict. Obviously the tuition remission paid off. Other
benefits included health care and vacations.
Don also stuck it out because of the good working conditions. "It's fun to work
here. There's lots of variety, and I like the people I work with -- both the men and the sisters."
Although he was hired to do painting, varnishing and staining, and really enjoys that, he's done
lots of other maintenance, from changing light bulbs to digging graves, which is now done the easy
way -- with a back hoe. Was it hard to work for women? No, says Don, all the sister supervisors
(plant and grounds managers) were "nice to work with and good to me."
Don is a Stearns County native and has lived here all his life. Home is a small
hobby farm about six and one-half miles north of St. Joseph. Retirement should come in about two and
one-half years or so. After that he would like to do volunteer work. One experience he would like to
repeat is travel. In March of 2001 he and Rose Ann took a Caribbean cruise, best described as "fun."
The kindness and prayers the sisters have given on many occasions are greatly
appreciated, as well as the "treats" for some of the work that he has done for individual sisters.
Although his mind "went blank" when he was asked to recall particularly funny or embarrassing
events, one at least surprised him. While painting some chairs for the college, using oil paint
which "drips a lot," he put a canvas under the chairs to catch the drips and protect the platform.
Seeing the multicolored canvas that resulted, Albert Schindler thought it was "a pretty nice
painting." Very likely the artistic Albert saw the resemblance to the work of Jackson Pollock. He
framed the painting and it hung in the paint shop for 28 years. When it was brought out for
demonstration at the awards ceremony this past winter, when Don received his 30-year award, all he
could say was "Oh, my gosh!" His surprise removed any brilliant or inspiring thoughts he might have
uttered for posterity.

William was born to Alois and Genevieve (Fruth) Mohs on October 28, 1934 in Luxemburg,
MN. He married Phyllis Lehnen on April 29, 1954. They lived in Luxemburg all their married life.
Bill was a carpenter all his life. He first worked for his father, then Megarry Brothers, Miller
Construction, Schoenberg Construction and Torborg Construction until he retired May 1, 1996. He was
a member of St. Wendelin's Parish all his life. He was also a member of St. Wendelin's Men's
Society, Catholic Aid Society and Moose Lodge #1400.
William was a music lover, and he especially enjoyed old time and country western
music. He liked to visit the casinos and try his luck. He enjoyed the outdoors, deer hunting,
fishing and snowmobiling. Bill also enjoyed playing the cordavox, cards and dancing. He enjoyed
playing the accordion for family and friends and tried to pass his dancing talent on to his
grandchildren. He would have loved to bestow his passion of carpentry on his family, but because of
their lack of carpentry skills, he stated, "it's plain to see that if you were working for me, I'd
have to let you go!"
William is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, David (Joyce), St. Augusta, Gary
(Louise), Luxemburg, Larry (girlfriend, Sue), Luxemburg, Annette (Kurt), Clear Lake and Dan (Tammy),
Rice; nine grandchildren, and sisters and brothers, Dolores, Mercedes, Eileen, Harvey, Alban,
Dorothy and Carol.
William was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gordon.

In about 1992 I got interested in the family genealogy because one of my adopted
mother's uncles had the same birth date as one of my grandchildren. I worked on her family tree
about a year and then thought why spend all this time and money on this tree when I could put the
effort on finding my birth family. So after some searching I found Fr. Fruth's publishings listed in
the Lib. of Congress listing (can you believe that! I didn't believe they listed things like that).
So with that knowledge I asked my best friend, Jan Brixius, who I had worked with for 20 years, if
her husband, who worked for the State of Minnesota as a librarian, knew where I could find a copy of
that pamphlet, never believing that there was a copy around after 40 years that I could read. Rod,
her husband, said sure we have one on the bookshelf at home. It turned out that Rod's g-g-father,
Peter Maus, had come to America in the 1840's and had worked here until he had enough money to send
for the rest of his family, which included his mother, one brother, and three sisters, of which one
was Catherine Maus, who married Hubert Hansen, who's daughter by the name of Anna Catherine Hansen
married Alois Fruth. I was able to find the Fruth family one month before Helen died [she died 25
Feb 1994], but I did not contact them until a few months later. Although my oldest daughter
Charlamaine & I did attend Helen's funeral, I did not talk to any of the relatives at that time. I
made contact with Martin Fruth, Helen's oldest brother, by having one of the Maus relatives talk to
him. He called me up and asked if his sister, Emma, & her husband, Doc, could meet me. After that I
met all the relatives at an 80th birthday party that was held for one of the other brothers. Several
of the brothers had told me that they knew that Helen had a child but they never knew if she had a
boy or girl. I guess that they didn't talk about stuff in those days. My biological father died in
1971. He and Helen never got married but stayed in touch with each other. Emma gave me a picture of
him. So to make a long story short, I was adopted at six weeks of age by Joseph Mengelkoch and
Margaret McGrath Mengelkoch. So that is the reason my name was Mengelkoch. Strange world isn't it.

DARWIN - Debra Agnes "Debbie" Howell, 50, of Darwin died Friday at her home. The
service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Darwin. Burial will be at the
church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in
Litchfield and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
She was born Aug. 24, 1956, in Buffalo to Andrew and Agnes (Steichen) Hentges. She grew
up and attended school in Litchfield. She married Richard Howell on June 22, 1986, in Memphis, Tenn.
They lived in Tennessee, Illinois, Mississippi and Arkansas. They moved to Darwin four years ago.
She worked for Imperial Cleaning Service for 15 years and also as an environmental technician at
Burns Manor.
She is survived by her husband; son: Christopher Nelson of Dassel; three grandchildren;

Shauna Maylinn Middendorf, infant daughter of Tim Middendorf and Jennifer Krugerud of
Freeport, was born and died on Feb. 5 at Melrose Area Hospital.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Rev.

Funeral services will be at 4:00 P.M. on Friday, September 2, 2005 at St. John's
Lutheran Church in Kimball, MN, for Samantha A. Fruth, age 14 of South Haven, who died on Tuesday,
August 30, 2005 at her home from complications of Sanfilippo Syndrome. Pastor David Milz of St.
John's Lutheran Church will officiate and Pastor Dave Strohschein, formerly of Holy Cross Lutheran
Church in St. Cloud, will give the message. Entombment will be in the St. Mary's Help of Christians
Church Parish Mausoleum at St. Augusta, MN. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at St.
John's Lutheran Church in Kimball. Arrangements are with Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud, MN.
Samantha was born on November 30, 1990 in St. Cloud, MN, the daughter of Curtis R. and
Shelly A. (Koehn) Fruth. She attended Oak Hill Elementary School in St. Cloud. She moved with her
family to South Haven in January 2003 and currently was home schooled through Kimball Public Schools
at Kimball, MN, where she had completed the 8th Grade.
She is survived by, her parents Curtis and Shelly of South Haven, one brother Daniel at
home, her grandparents Carl and Noreen Koehn and Eugene and Janet Fruth all of St. Cloud, MN.
Her family would like to express their appreciation and thanks to all the special
people that helped care for Samantha over the years.
