Haisterkirch: The village today does not possess a pub, though at the time of Karl the Great the
place was a focal point for a far-surrounding countryside. A family and baptizing church was
mentioned in old documents but at this time only the Roman church tower remains.
The rise to the Grabener Height takes place leisurely and to a large extent in natural
coniferous forest. A number of turns brings one to the 1741 built and 1872 extended Sebastian's
Chapel, an old place of pilgrimage. The ceiling fresco is by the baroque painter, Gebhardt Fugel.
The prospect of the loaf-like crest of the Grabener Height is great. Beyond are about
18 square kilometers of the protected area called the Wurzacher Reeds. The green and grey patterns
and the name-giving small town are eyecatchers. Behind it, the particularly beautifully long chain
of the Alps emerges.
To the west, the valley of the Sharkbrook can be seen, but Bad Waldsee hides itself
behind the forest, enthroned in the distance of the hill landscape.
Children of Johann Wink and Crescenz Brauchle are:
Maria Anna Wink, born 15 Apr 1817 in

Obituary - Der Nordstern, Thursday 9 Apr 1908, page 5
Which translates as:
In the house of his son John on last-but-one Sunday morning Mr. Anton Wink at the
extremely high age of 84 years passed away blessedly into Jesus. The deceased was born in Stuttgart,
Württemberg, [ed: he was born in Haisterkirch, Donaukreis, Württemberg, which is relatively near

established himself, where he operated his blacksmith handicraft. From Torah, he transferred his
home to St. Cloud, from there to Two Rivers (township in Morrison Co, MN) and then to St. Paul where
his wife preceded him into the eternity. After the death of his spouse he came to Cold Spring and
had since then his home with his son Johann. Together with this (son) mourn the death of the good
father also three sons Heinrich, Nicholas and Anton and a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Young (Yunck).
After, on Tuesday morning in the St. Boniface church, a Requiem mass was held, took place the
funeral under large participation. May the deceased rest in peace!

Cemetery in Union Center, Juneau County, Wisconsin. This is about 4 miles from Wonewoc, where my
ancestors are also from. First, John Harper (b. 12-8-1818 in Co. Wexford, Ire.; d. 1-27-1901)
Margaret (b. 11-14-1822 in Co. Louth, Ire.; d. 5-24-1907). The next plot has Valentine Wink (b. in
Wurtemberg on 2-14-1830; d 1-17-1901) Catherine (b. in Luxemburg on 1-29-1828; d. 2-1-1914)."
"Have you gone to the Juneau County WiGenWeb site yet? They have now posted a plat map
of Wonewoc Township, including Union Center. On my 1875? incomplete copy of the map, Valentine Wink
owned 116 acres (section 20) just a bit west of one of my ancestors, Joseph Fisher, whose wife,
Theresia, is the one that St. Theresia's church and cemetery are named for. Some Harper lived in
section 18, about a mile from there. My map is cut off at that point."

Anton Wink's daughter, Theresia Crescentia Wink, was born Oct 15, 1849 in Württemberg.
(Note: the 1870 and 1885 census list Württemberg, the 1875 census lists Baden, the 1880 census lists
Hanover, and the 1895 census list Germany as her birth place.) Per the 1895 State census, she had
lived in the US and Stearns County for 43 years, implying she came to the US and Minnesota about
1851. As Theresia was only two years old when she emigrated, it is likely that Anton and his wife
also emigrated about 1851.
In the 1870 Federal census, this name appeared in the Frank & Theresia (Wink) Schaefer
household: Anton Wink, age 11, born about 1859 in Wisconsin. Anton is Theresia's younger brother, so
the Wink's must have passed through Wisconsin about 1859, making questionable Theresia's claim of
being in Stearns County since age 2.
In the 1885 Minnesota census, these names appeared in the Frank & Theresia (Wink)
Schaefer household: John Wink, age 16, born about 1869 in Minnesota and Mary Wink, age 14, born
about 1871 in Minnesota. They are Theresia and Anton's younger siblings. This would imply that that
family lived in Minnesota in 1869-1871.

Notes for Peter Frank Wink:
HISTORY of BUFFALO COUNTY and its PEOPLE
by Samuel Bassett Vol II 1916 THE C. S. CLARKE PUBLISHING COMPANY
Hon. Peter Wink, for thirty-one years a resident of Buffalo county, and at present
engaged in the real estate business in Kearney, was born in Wright county, Minnesota, on the 25th of
September, 1859. The parents, Valentine and Catherine (Peters) Wink, were farming people and in
pioneer times the father took up a homestead claim in Wright county, Minnesota, where he carried on
general agricultural pursuits until his removal to Juneau county, Wisconsin, where his remaining
days were passed, his death occurring in 1904.
Peter Wink is the second in order of birth in a family of four children, all of whom
are yet living. In his early boyhood he attended the neighboring district schools and when old
enough he began to earn his own living, being variously employed. For a considerable time he rafted
lumber from the pineries south on the Mississippi river and he was also engaged in digging two
tunnels for the Northwestern Railroad Company. During harvest seasons he would hire out to farmers,
receiving as high as five dollars per day for his services. This period of his life was filled with
an abundance of hard work and was passed among real people who were struggling to get ahead in the
world. This was the period perhaps which most largely developed and determined his character. While
untiring labor was the order of the day this was also a period of enjoyment, for youth, virile and
compelling, made little of obstacles. Mr. Wink saved considerable part of his earnings, the inherent
thrift of his German forbears undoubtedly teaching him the importance of saving for the proverbial
rainy day. He became foreman on a farm in Clinton county, Iowa, and occupied that position for two
years.
It was in the year 1879 that Mr. Wink was united in marriage to Miss Mary Farrell, and
in 1884 he removed to Buffalo county, Nebraska, and purchased two hundred and forty acres of
railroad land in Thornton township at four dollars per acre. For twenty-seven years he there
resided, devoting his life to general farming and stockraising, during which period he brought his
fields to a high state of cultivation and added many modern improvements to the farm, which he still
owns. In 1911, however, he left the farm and removed to Kearney, where he opened a real estate
office and has since beep engaged in that line of business. He is thoroughly conversant concerning
property values and he has negotiated many important realty transfers, being accorded a liberal
clientage in his line.
As the years went on Mr. and Mrs. Wink became the parents of four children: Frank,
John, Clara and Alice, but the last named is deceased. The mother passed away in May, 1909, and for
his second wife Mr. Wink chose Miss Bertha Vermeulen. In religious faith Mr. Wink is a Roman
Catholic. His political allegiance is given to the democratic party and in 1913 he was elected state
senator from the twenty-second senatorial district comprising the counties of Kearney, Buffalo and
Sherman. He was reelected in 1915 and is now serving for the second term. During both sessions he
has been a member the ways and means committee and. during the session of 1915 he was chairman of
the committee on irrigation and water power. He took an active part in constructive legislation and
was the author of several bills that were passed and are now found on the statute books of the
state. He has labored persistently for the benefit of the community and of the commonwealth and
efforts have been far-reaching and resultant.
BUFFALO COUNTY TELEPHONE COMPANY
In the year 1903 several meetings of farmers residing in Thornton and adjoining
townships resulted in the organization on April 1, 1903, of the Buffalo County Telephone Company,
those signing the articles of incorporation being: George Bischel, Peter Wink, H. G. Rieter, J. D.
Lowenstein and W. D. Stadleman. The officers elected being: Peter Wink, president; Joseph A. Waters,
vice presidest; George Bischel, secretary; John L. Hopper, treasurer; W. J. Stadleman, manager. The
board of directors was: George Bischel, Joseph A. Waters, John L. Hopper, P. F. H. Schars and Peter
Wink. The lines of the company covering territory embraced in Center, Thornton, Valley, Schneider,
Cedar, Beaver and Loup townships. At the close of the year 1906 the company had 225 miles of wire
and 225 phones installed. By January, 1908, the company was out of debt and in September, 1908, a
dividend of 15 per cent was declared. In January 1909, it was decided to divide the territory, those
tributary to Pleasanton to go with the Pleasanton company and be called the Buffalo County Telephone
Company and a new company to be formed to cover the territory tributary to Kearney.

Obituary: Wonewoc Reporter, Friday, 12 Aug 1932: WALTER WINK
Walter Wink was born at Red Wing, Minn., Aug. 12, 1861 and died Aug. 5, 1932 at his
home in Union Center after an illness of only two days. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and
paralysis of the left side while at his farm Wednesday, at about noon.
Mr. Wink spent his boyhood days on this farm where his parents lived after coming to
this vicinity and when in later years he was married to Miss Mary Harper, they bought the farm and
their three children, Nora, Edward and Clyde were born there. The two boys preceded him to the
better world in their early manhood.
He is survived by his faithful wife, the daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Murphy,
Mrs. Margaret Wink, widow of Edward, eight grandchildren, one brother, John, and one sister, Mrs.
Mary Beres, besides many other distant relatives who mourn the sudden passing away.
Mr. Wink had been a rural mail carrier for some time and a stock buyer 34 years in this
vicinity, so had a large acquaintance and many friends in the county who will miss his ??? smile and
greeting.
The funeral services were held Monday at 10 o'clock at St. Theresa's church, of which
he was a faithful member. The high mass and sermon were given by the pastor Rev. Fr. Braun, with a
very large crowd in attendance. Among those from away who attended the services were Mrs. Margaret
Wink and three children and Peter Fable of Hudson. Miss Johanna Murphy of Sparta and Mr. and Mrs.
Healy of Beaver Dam.
From Dennis Wink 13 Jan 2005:
I think I have the mystery of Walter figured out. 1870 Census shows:

Peter
11 m

Valentine Jr. 10 m

After taking a closer look at the 1870 Census, the entry for Valentine Jr. might be Valentine J.
If Walter was born in 1861, and still living, he should be listed in the census. 1900
Census for Valentine Wink states that Catherine had 4 children and 4 are living. Also the 1900
Census list a Joseph Wink, wife Mary, children Nora E and Edward F. His date of birth is listed as
Aug 1861. All census data is for Wonewoc.
If you compare this data to the Obituary for Walter, then Walter and Joseph are the
same person. This seems like a logical conclusion to me. The only question I have is "Where did the
name Walter come from?" What do you think?

GROUND SQUIRREL BOUNTY, 1894: In 1894 Buffalo County was overrun by ground squirrels, and a bounty
of $0.03 was offered to eradicate the problem. A current (1992) estimate suggests that they cause
$2M in damage to corn crops, but in 1894 the rodent's burrows also presented a hazard to livestock,
which would step into their holes and break a leg. In June and July of that year more than 13,000
"13 liners" were killed at a cost to the county of less than $400.
One can imagine that many of the bounty hunters were children, motivated by the
prospect of earning money. Some 13-liners were probably shot, but most squirrels were probably taken
by poisoning or drowning. Though the 13-liner took a severe hit in the summer of 1894 it was not
eradicated, and survives in gardens and lawns today.
The bounty claim books are in the Archives of the Buffalo County Historical Society. If
more information is desired, please write to the Fort Kearny Genealogical Society, Box 22, Kearney,
NE 68848, or the Buffalo County Historical Society, Box 523, Kearney, NE 68848.
