Lillian Panny (née Dragosits)

Lillian Panny, 94, a longtime resident of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, passed away January 26, 2023.

Born November 11, 1928 in Gerersdorf bei Güssing, Austria, she was a daughter of the late John and Julia (Kroboth) Dragosits. In order to avoid the Nazi party's rise to power, Lillian's parents moved to the United States to work and save enough money to eventually bring Lillian and her siblings here to join them. The family was reunited in Manhattan, New York when Lillian was eight years old.

Lillian grew up in the Bronx and moved to Michigan in 1951 when her new husband, William Panny, had an opportunity to work for the Chrysler Corporation. It was difficult leaving her family, but Metro Detroit quickly became home. Lillian was a generous soul, always focused on others' needs. She and William enjoyed a wonderful marriage, and were each other's bookends; they completed one another, and best worked and laughed together. They certainly were a living example of how to build a happy marriage together that works with love and humor mixed in. Lillian was a faithful Catholic and was a parishioner at St. Hugo Catholic Church for many years. She was also a former parishioner of St. Thomas More in Troy. She had a lifelong affinity for angels and will be remembered as an angel herself- with some spunk.

Lillian was the beloved wife of the late William. Loving mother of Gail Gudith (late Larry), Lynne Panny, Karen Linton (Mark), and Bill Panny (Denise). Devoted grandmother of W. Bryan Linton (Julie), Jenn Linton, and Isabella Panny, and great-grandmother of Charles and Daniel Linton.

Funeral mass Tuesday 10am at St. Hugo Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Rd, Bloomfield Hills. Visitation at church begins at 9:30am. Interment at Guardian Angel Cemetery, Rochester. A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 248-362-2500. Memorial tributes to the Alzheimer's Association.

Hedvig Takacs (née Venci)

Hedvig Takacs, 84, of Medinah, Illinois passed away unexpectedly on February 26, 2023.

Hedvig ("Heidi") was born on February 8, 1939 to Joszef and Maria Venci in Horvátlövö (Hrvatske Sice/Kroatisch Schützen), Hungary.

On December 9, 1956 at the age of 18, she escaped Hungary with her cousin on foot in the dead of night following the Hungarian Revolution. Her heroic journey to freedom took her from Hungary to a refugee camp in Austria, where she resided before finally arriving in America with the help of her great uncle George Pock. Despite not knowing any English, Hedvig established herself in America working in Chicago as a nanny and, later, at Hammond Organ Company. She was proud to become an American citizen. In Chicago, she met and later married the love of her life Geza Takacs on December 31, 1962, who also was a refugee from the Hungarian Revolution. Their marriage endured for 45 years until Geza's passing in 2007.

Hedvig cared deeply about her roots and traveled back to Hungary many times. She never forgot her family and missed her homeland. She was fluent in three languages and attended business school while still in Hungary. She was a stalwart and tenacious woman who devoted herself selflessly to her precious family, lovingly sacrificing all her time in their support. Her love of God and nature permeated every aspect of her life. She conquered cancer 40 years ago after being given 3 months to live relying on natural immunity-boosting therapies alone, and her story has saved people's lives, giving many hope that a cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence. In 2019, Hedvig suffered a stroke. Her tenacity and strong will to live led to a full recovery, again inspiring others to never give up on their body's ability to heal. She was a beacon for healthy living before it became the trend. Her wisdom has been passed on to her daughters, who continue to champion her cause that health solutions exist outside conventional medicine. Hedvig led an independent life to the very end, peacefully living in a forest that she lovingly planted with native wildflowers. She was a natural-born horticulturist, collecting and proliferating flora from all her earthly travels. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed bird-watching. She had a great sense of style and an eye for design, and she had the gift of making everything she touched look beautiful. Hedvig's greatest joy in life was her family, especially her grandchildren, and she treasured every moment they had together. She was the rock of the family and their hero, and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered.

Hedvig is the devoted mother of Cynthia Takacs Csato and Melody Takacs, beloved mother-in-law of Peter Csato, loving grandmother of Xavier Takacs Csato and Makoa Takacs Aweau, and cherished sister of Steven Venci.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home located at 333 South Roselle Rd (½ mile S. of Irving Park Rd) in Roselle, Illinois 60172 beginning with a rosary service. Josef Pelzmann

Josef Pelzmann, 81 of Lawson, Missouri passed away September 13th at North Kansas City Hospital surrounded by his family.

Joe Pelzmann, also known as "wheels" among his friends, was born on April 1, 1942 in Nemesmedves (Ginisdorf), Hungary to Josef and Julianna (Marx) Pelzmann. His mother did not want an April Fools baby, so she gave his date of birth as April 2, 1942. Joe was born in the home which sat on the Austrian-Hungary border with the front door being in Hungary and the back door in Austria.

At the age of 5, the Russian Military gave Joe's family the choice to move to Germany to survive the war. They left with the clothes on their back, relocating to Neuler, Germany. His father was being held as a POW in Siberia. Joe, at the age of 5, started his first job as a sheep herder; in exchange he was given food and shelter. As he grew older he was given more responsibilities and soon was transferring the milk to town on a horse drawn wagon, stopping along the way to pick up the children to take them to school. After school he went back to town to get the wagon and empty milk cans, picking up the children and taking them home.

After six years his father was released from Siberia, but was in rough shape. With no place to call home, they made the decision to follow other relatives to the United States. Joe was 15 years old at the time and they stayed with relatives in Haledon, New Jersey.
All had to have a job, so Joe was given a shoe shine kit and taught to say, "shine Mr. shine". It didn't take Joe long to learn that the best money was in the bars.

Joe graduated from High School and was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. The first day home from Vietnam was his 1st day with Ford Motor Company. He retired after 36 years. Joe was working in Edison, New Jersey when it was shut down, and he was sent to the Claycomo Ford Plant in 1984. Joe and Kathy met in 1987, and have been together ever since, marrying in 1999. Joe was a lover of all animals and very family oriented. He didn't know a stranger and loved being a grandfather to his grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his father Josef Pelzmann, mother Julianna Pelzmann, and brother Anton Pelzmann.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn Pelzmann and sister Marianne Pelzmann of the home. Three children; Sherie Robb (Dave Mansell) of Kearney, MO, Brian Adkins (Lisha Camburako) of Olathe, KS, David Adkins (Janie) of Kansas City, MO. Six grandchildren; Michael Adkins (Crystal), Kaitlyn Grindstaff (Mike), Samantha Woods (Elijah), Stratton Baird, Joseph Adkins (Hanna), Trenton Adkins, and two great-grandchildren Avery Adkins, Weston Adkins with an additional great-grandson on the way.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 10:00 am, with the Funeral Services following directly after at 11:00 am at Hidden Valley Funeral Home 5951 MO-10, Excelsior Springs, MO 64024. Karl Schwenk

Karl "Doc" Schwenk, age 84, of Canton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2023.

Born in Sopronbánfalva (Wandorf), Hungary on April 21, 1939, he was a son of the late Karl Schwenk and Susanna (Degendorfer) Schwenk Gruber.

At the age of twelve and speaking only German, Karl immigrated with his mother to the United States in 1951. He quickly adapted, playing both basketball and football at Ellwood City High School and graduated in 1958 as the President of his senior class. He continued his education first at Geneva College and then at Ball State University where he earned a Master's and PhD in Molecular Biology.

Karl loved the sciences (could repeat Avogadro's number in his sleep) and was deeply committed to sharing his knowledge with others. He began a decades-long career of teaching in 1973 at Walsh College in Canton, Ohio. There he oversaw the Nursing Program, ran the Anatomy & Physiology Labs, and ultimately served as Chair of the Department of Sciences. One of his most rewarding accomplishments while at Walsh was assisting his students in the reconstruction of "Bondo Betty". Karl was an instrumental member of the Mastodon Restoration Committee and Betty the Mastodon is now proudly displayed at Discovery World in the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. In 1978, Karl decided to make a change and began teaching at Tuscarawas Valley High School. There, he was known for holding students to a high standard and although his classes of chemistry and physics were among the hardest in the school, he was widely respected by his students who endearingly refereed to him simply as "Doc". During his 22 years of teaching high school, Karl would go on to win multiple teaching awards, including the prestigious Governor's Award five years in a row. Perhaps what he is most remembered for is his contribution to science fairs; local, state, and international. Many of his students would go on to compete and win at the International Science and Engineering Fair, which currently stands as the world's largest pre-college science competition.

In addition, Karl was an active member of the community, participating in the Caldwell Masonic Lodge and serving as President & Treasurer of the Plain Township Lions Club. Karl had many hobbies but among his most favorite was a fascination with tropical fish (at one time he had a combined number of fish tanks totaling 140-plus gallons), photography, and of course, memories that reminded him of Germany; especially apple strudel and Franziskaner beer. Nothing however, compared to his passion for his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers! Above all else, Karl was a people-person and cherished spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, always encouraging them to study hard and pimping them with questions about chemistry and physics. He will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Karl Schwenk; mother and stepfather, Susanna and John Gruber. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Donna Schwenk; children, Karl (Julie) Schwenk, Karen (Charles) Johnson; grandchildren, Karl Hunter Schwenk, Jacob Heid, Nathan Heid, Karalyn Schwenk, Olivia Schwenk, Matthew Johnson, Leah Johnson; and cousins, Emily Majewski and Elizabeth Barkus.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Aultman Hospice and Windsor Medical Center for their care and support in the final weeks of his life. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Karl would be most honored with donations to support the students and teachers of Tuscarawas Valley High School at trojanfoundation.org/donate. Please visit reedfuneralhome.com to sign the online guestbook.

Emil Geosits

Our Opa, Emil Geosits, of Staten Island, New York, joined his loving wife, Angela, in heaven on Friday, December 15, 2023 after 82 years on this earth.

Born in Gaas, Austria during the second world war, he was raised on a farm with his siblings: Adolf, Albert, Josef, John, Gretl, Yolanda, and Annie. At the young age of 18 he left his home in search of a new beginning in America.

They settled in New York and raised five children all of whom would grow up to be successful: Alicia Buscemi and husband Jon, Steven Geosits and wife Christina, Joseph Geosits and wife Brooke, Catherine Cannella and husband Don and Emil Geosits Jr. and wife Tara. Each of them had their own children, blessing him with a total of 14 grandchildren: Emily, John Michael, Annamarie, Frank, Salvatore, Angelina, William, Thomas, Ethan, Daniel, Leo, Jake, Mason, and Jaclynn.

Emil worked in several professions before settling and working for over 25 years as a cable technician. Devoted to his family, friends, and church -- he would help with any task at hand, no matter how tough or costly to himself. He is known as "the man, the myth, the legend" amongst those who loved him. He was a child at heart, playing soccer with his grandchildren, building/repairing dams at Wolfe's Pond Park, trying to hit birds with rocks, exploring the beach, fishing, recycling everything and creating his famous mango mix.
When he wasn't helping out, he would be busy preparing to feed the masses with his overflowing garden that produced the best eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, and squash that everyone craved. His greatest accomplishment was creating a basement & foundation for his already standing home while continuing to live there with his family.
Lastly, he loved spending time with his family on Sundays which is where he was an inspiration to his grandchildren, teaching them all sorts of life lessons. He will be forever missed.

The family immigrated to the United States in 1930, arriving through Ellis Island. Settling in NYC, Mary attended elementary school and George Washington High School.
