Wehofer | Lois (Wehofer) Carney | Mischendorf (Pinkamiske) | Paul Wehofer came to America when 15-16 years old (1913)and went to live with cousins near Chicago sometime after his mother died. Living in 1917 at 7018 Justine, Chicago, Illinois. Came from Pinkamiske, Vas, Hungary that was later known as Mischendorf, Burgenland, Austria after World War I (1917). Generations of Wehofers have spread over a relatively small area, with the highest concentrations in descending order: Wien (Vienna) Austria (30%), Mischendorf (6%), Rust (5%), Yspertac (3%), Tadten (3%), and so forth to lesser concentrations. Paul is an assumed name or derivative (perhaps originally Paule), given to him by an aunt, for unknown reasons upon coming to the USA. Paul married Clara and they operated a small limited bakery in the Chicago area for a few years during the wartime 40's. Entry to Ellis Island, New York: Paul Wehoffer (SP!) arrived April 28, 1913 at age 16 from Pinkamilka Ungary (all their spelling not mine), ethnicity: Ungarn (Hungarian) German. Port of Departure Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France on the ship Rochambeau. Destination: Going to brother Adolf in Chicago, 141 W. 45th St., Chicago, Ill.. Relative still in Hungary father Franz. Paul's 1918 Draft Registration shows Residence 7018 S. Justine, Chicago. Nearest Relative: Adolf Radohowitz (Radowicz)? 5127 S. Wells, Chicago, Ill. The connection to a "Brother" Adolf Radohowitz is really confusing with no family explanation. His known brothers/sisters do not include an Adolf; and are Franz "Frank"; Johanna, Michael, Joseph and Vincennes as relayed by his grandson William (Bill) 25 years ago. |

Weiss | Ed Gomboz | Sankt Michael (Puszta-Szent-Mihály) | Settled in Chicago via Ellis Island New York April 21, 1922. My Grandmother, Veronica Weiss, was born 25 February 1901 and emigrated to Chicago with two of her sisters (Karolina and Johann). All three sisters sailed together on a ship named Hannover from Bremen Germany, arriving in New York 21 April 1922. The parents of the Weiss sisters were Franz and Anna Weiss were married in Sankt Michael on 29 January 1896. Anna's maiden name was Karausz born 8 March 1874 in Deutsch Tschantschendorf. Franz Weiss was born 27 October 1870 in Markt Allhau. They are both buried in Sankt Michael. On the other side of the family my grandfather Matyas Gomboz was born 2 May 1900. Matyas apparently lived close by to the Weiss sisters across the border as the story is retold from my 95 year old Aunt as he and his buddies we come over and steal (borrow) apples from the Weiss yard or farm. Some research done years ago by another aunt lists Matyas's birth place as Slovenija Hungary. His town was possibly in modern day Slovenia or maybe Hungary. I'm not finding much information on him. His name may have gotten modified coming through US customs, possibly Gombotz, Gombocz, Gomboc, or Gombos. It is spelled differently on various census and other records. We have a trip planned the Austria, Slovenia, and Germany in May 2020 and are hoping to visit the towns they grew up in and learn anything we can about their time there. |

Wernitz | Jozsef Imre | Güns (Köszeg) | I have got as far as identifying my ancestors Carolus Anhalt and Barbara Wernitz getting married in Koszeg in 1804.Barbara's birth was also found in Koszeg on 27/10/1778. There she has the names of her parents, Martinus Wernitz and Catharina Khim(?), but I could not go further back on either line. As for Carolus Anhalt I have found in your database for Szentpéterfa his birth record. According to that he was born on 31/12/1777 to Andreas Einhalt and Theresa. Here again I am stuck and do not seem to be able to trace the lines back any further. |

Wilfing | Mary Kay Felton | Harka (Harkau), Hungary | My family left Harka Hungary twice. My grandfather, Samuel Payer, son of Tobias Payer and Theresia Reitter came to the United States when Samuel was a boy. Samuel, his brother Albert, and their parents came to the United States in the early 1900s. Sam and Alberts younger brother Tobias Payer, Jr. (Toby) and younger sister, Marie, were born in the US. Sam was in the US army in WWI. Sam later returned to Hungary when his mother became ill with Tuberculosis and wanted to return to her home in Hungary. The second time my grandfather left Harkau was with the evacuation in 1945, when the Russians took over the village. They evacuated to Austria and later emigrated to the US to join the family they already had living there. When they left Hungary for the final time (in 1945), Sam was married to Anna Maria (Marie) Klein. The couple left Hungary with their four children, Frida, Ernst, Emma (my mother) and Fritz Payer. Their names were still on the Protestant Church wall when I visited in 2006. I would like more information about both my Payer and my Klein lines, and the various other lines of each of my grandparents. Payer, Klein, Reitter, Wilfing, Eckel, Buchhaas, and Payerl are among those, but I have few specific details. I would love to see copies of primary birth, marriage and death records for my family and their ancestors. |

Wurm | Joan Cook | Tobaj (Tobaj) | My grandfather John Leitgeb arrived in NY on the Hansa from Hamburg on February 13, 1923. His mother was Maria Leitgeb (possibly Maria (Mary) Leitgeb 11/9/1884-8/5/1942?) and his stepfather was Ignatz Kroboth (11/11/1871-11/11/1946 - Tobay 95?). John Leitgeb settled in Yorkville, NY and later moved out to Medford, Long Island, NY. His stepsiblings were Theresa Kroboth Roth (9/14/1906-9/29/1991), Ignatz Kroboth (2/??/1908-2/26/1973), Maria (Mary) Kroboth Hoffman (3/29/1909-12/17/1983) and Johanna Kroboth (9/29/1912-2/23/2003). My grandmother was Maria (Mary) Leitgeb (11/4/1899-10/25/1986). Maria Leitgeb's parents were Theresia Schweitzer (no dates) and Josephus Leitgeb (no dates) - 88 Tobaj?. Maria arrived in NY on November 4, 1922 on the SS Ryndam. She traveled using her sister Hermina's passport (we don't know why). Her siblings include Rosa Leitgeb Altmann (3/26/1884-11/22/1954), Josef Leitgeb (11/5/1895(1893)-9/17/1910), Theresia Leitgeb Schneider (9/23/1897-8/27/1976) and Hermina Leitgeb Stimpfl (1/10/1906-1/23/1985). The families all lived together in NYC and Yorkville and later moved out to Medford, LI, NY. The mystery I am trying to solve: I was told my grandfather's biological father was John Schweitzer (2/4/1882 - 6/15/1930 - also from Tobaj) who lived in Northhampton, PA with his wife Rose Wiener Schweitzer (1883-1/18/1971). I was told that my grandmother's mother (Theresia Schweitzer) was a cousin to my grandfather's biological father (John Schweitzer). Family names are: Leitgeb, Kroboth, Schweitzer, Stimpfl, Unger, Astel (Gussing nr. 90) , Jost, Wurm, Nikitscher. |
